PLEASE USED FORESTRY MERIT IMAGE
Conservation Project Opportunity and Forestry Merit Badge
There is a project in Clinton where scouts are needed the first week in April. The project is to check Clinton for emerald ash borer (EAB) with the foresters from the NYSDEC Division of Lands and Forests. Scouts, leaders, and adult family members are needed. We will be with DEC forestry staff, Girl Scouts, SUNY Morrisville State College students, and Hamilton College students walking down streets throughout the village. While it will be very difficult to determine EAB damage at this time of year, we will initiate an urban forest inventory of the ash trees in the village to revisit them for signs of damage in the future.
There will be a training in the evening of Thursday, April 6th that is appropriate for scouts. Then on Friday and Saturday, teams will be going throughout the village to see if we have EAB in any of the ash trees that are publicly visible. Scouts with leaders or family members will be teamed up with foresters and college students to check different areas of the village.
Scout will primarily swing into action on Saturday the 8th. There will be other groups helping too. I will be working with the initial survey on Friday the 7th, working out the “bugs” in the methodology.
Interested? Please contact Brendan Kelly at kellybt@morrisville.edu for more information. If you have safety vests, please bring them.
