Community Service Opportunity

Here is an opportunity for service time and a chance to visit the Utica Zoo. If you are interested please notify Mrs. Lott and copy Scoutmaster Obernesser as well:

Mr. Obernesser,

I am on a committee that is planning what will be a huge event at the Utica Zoo on August 29th. The event is “Cultures & Creatures” and it is going to be a celebration of all the MANY different culture communities that live in the Mohawk Valley (European, African, Middle Eastern, Asian) and our local, beautiful zoo.

Many businesses large and small are involved as sponsors and volunteers. Right now they are lacking volunteers who will specifically help with the clean-up. The event runs from 11am-7pm and the Executive Director of the Zoo is expecting approximately 6,000 visitors for the event.

I am writing to see if your troop would be interested in volunteering to help with the clean up? The scouts could arrive around 5pm to enjoy the event, and clean up should begin around 6pm. The director feels it will probably take from 6-8:30pm. She will provide gloves and garbage bags for the volunteers to walk around the Zoo (in pairs would probably be good) to pick up garbage, etc.

Again, it’s happening on 8/29, and the clean-up crew would need to start at 6pm and will probably need to be there until about 8:30pm. There will be shuttles running from MVCC and the Parkway, but I am guessing that as volunteers the scouts could park up in the Zoo parking lot.

Please let me know what you think. It would be a great experience for the scouts and a nice way to earn some community service time!
