Scouting for Food

Our annual good turn “Scouting for Food is this Saturday to place door hangers and Nov 12 for pick up.  We will be meeting both Saturdays at the NH American Legion at 10 AMThis Saturday should take an hour to 90 minutes.  Following the pick up on the 12th, we plan on going to Camp Kingsley for an overnight.  We need a good head count for food purchase.  If you are going camping you need to bring $6 to the next meeting.   We need drivers for both Saturdays.

10-19-16 Meeting Change

Our Wednesday meeting will be at the NH Firehouse on Oxford Rd.  Please be there by 6:45 so that we can conduct business prior to the tour.  Doug Wilbur’s father in law, Ed Ingersoll has agreed to teach Fire Safety MB.  Mr. Ingersoll is a retired Utica Fire Dept. Captain.  I would suggest that you print out a Fire Safety work book from the internet and become familiar with the requirements before the visit to the fire house.

Meeting 10-5-16

This Wednesday is a Court of Honor.  We will be awarding MBs and Rank Advancements to almost every scout.  We will also be doing our annual Youth Protection Training which is mandatory for all leaders and parents who participate, including driving to events.  Refreshments will be served,

Many scouts are in the rears in their monthly dues, ($1/ month).  Please have them paid ASAP.

Our District Camporee is Oct 14-16 in German Flats east of Mohawk on Rte. 5s.  We need to preregister for this event!  I need a good head count on Wednesday.  The cost of the event will be covered by the troop treasury.  Attendees will need food estimated at $10.

World Brotherhood Camporee at Wellsey Island

All:  We have reserved 3 sites which will accommodate 20 people at Wellsey Island State park for September 23-25.  I absolutely need to know if you are planning to go to this great event by the beginning of the troop mtg. thiscoming Wednesday.  We are looking into visiting Boldt Castle on Heart Island on Sunday before heading home.  This trip requires a special BSA Tour Permit showing the number of scouts, adults and drivers to and from.  Please respond to this with a definite yes I am going or no a cannot make it.  The troop will cover the cost of the camporee registration, the boat ride to Heart Island and the admission fee to Boldt Castle.  You should plan on bringing $12 to cover your food costs to the Sept. 14th mtg.  Patrols will be planning, buying and cooking their own meals on this trip.   FYI there will be a trading post sponsored by the Longhouse Council at this event.

Good Turn Opportunity

The General Herkimer Home in Herkimer provides learning opportunities for our community and a look back into colonial life.  They are in need of assistance which would provide our scouts with service hours/ project.  On September 10th, they are requesting help with removing landscaping plants in preparation for the winter season.  They are also looking for some scouts to help with their Halloween program at Glimmerglass state park on October 14 &15th (someone to scare people on their haunted hay ride). Before I answer, I would like to know if anyone is interested in either… Please respond to this e-mail to let me know.  Thank you!

Popcorn and Chocolate Fundraiser Information

Hello!  It is that time of year again for Troop 4’s annual fundraiser.  The scouts should have already received a popcorn order form in the mail and may begin selling take order popcorn tomorrow.  These orders are due to the pack at the October 26th meeting to give time to tally all orders and submit to our vendor.  We will also be doing a Gertrude Hawk Chocolate Sales again this year as well.  I will have these forms to hand out at the September 7th meeting.  These orders will also be due October 26th.  Both popcorn and chocolate orders will need to be picked up on November 18th time/place TBA.  All money is dueNovember 30th scout meeting.

This year, troop 4 has opted to participate in popcorn show and sell.
What is a show and sell?  As a troop, we have purchased a limited amount of popcorn to sell prior to the take order sales.
How does it work?  We have arranged venues in which the boys can bring this popcorn to and set up a spot in front of the store, away from the door in which to sell to approaching customers.   Scouts and their responsible adult will sign out popcorn from storage trailer with either Stacy Gadway or Amy Smith and take popcorn to respective site.   A second blank form will be given to accepting adult to complete at change of shift handover and left with accepting adult.  Scouts MUST WEAR CLASS A UNIFORM and be respectful of the venue (store), employees, and customers whether they decide to support scouts or not.  “Leave No Trace” should be adhered to at all times.   Scouts may approach the people entering the store and ask them to support scouts by purchasing popcorn.  Money is due at time of sale.  Shifts are scheduled for 10-1 and 1-4.  At change of shift handover another adult accepts responsibility of remaining popcorn and money and both adults signs form.  At end of time period all unsold popcorn and collected money will be returned to storage trailer and hand off completed with either Stacy Gadway or Amy Smith with completed and signed forms being retained by Stacy/Amy.  These completed form serve several purposes: to accurately credit each scout with amount sold and to ensure accountability of popcorn and money.  It is a good idea to have change available which is not provided by the troop.  I recommend $100 : $20 in  $1’s and $80 in $5’s.
How does my scout sign up to participate? Respond to this email to both Stacy Gadway and Amy Smith  with your scouts 1st and 2nd choice of date and time.  Spots will be assigned in a 1st responds 1stchoice manner until all times are covered.  You will then be notified of your place, date, and time via email.  Please remember if you can not participate that day due to illness/other emergancy, notify Stacy315-272-3657 and Amy 315316-7640 ASAP to arrange an alternate.

**** Also of note, we will be participating in this show and sell in conjunction with the New Hartford Cub Scout Troop with one Boy Scout and one Cub Scout working together and splitting credit equally.
